During the new year’s eve fireworks in Åmotfors I managed to capture some of the action. I just brought my camera without planning for the shoot. These images were all taken handheld with ISO 200 (the native ISO on my camera) and 2,5 seconds shutter speed. Nothing interesting in the foreground. Basically the images were all shot just for fun and to some extent to prepare myself for a real fireworks shoot in the future.

Smoke Pillars
A couple of days ago in Åmotfors there were some nice colors in the sky. The two smoke pillars together with the trees in the foreground gives the scene an eerie feeling. At first I tried to create an HDR image but the result was not satisfactory at all. In the post-processing I used a single exposure and brought back some information from the sky and added a light vignette. That pretty much gave the result I was after.
It’s in the end of December and still no snow. That’s weird.
Moose Hunt
I went with my father-in-law looking for moose. We wanted to get a glimpse of one of the white moose. We didn’t manage to find any moose at all on that trip. If we don’t count the one almost standing in my garden when we came back home. But it was way too dark by then and it wasn’t white after all.

This is a view over Arvika at the far end of an icy Kyrkviken. It’s an HDR image (obviously) of five exposures. I didn’t get the natural look I like but the light wasn’t ideal this time.
Kyrkviken
A couple of weeks ago I took some shots of Kyrkviken while taking a walk. It’s a bit soft and the lighting wasn’t the best but I kinda like it still. It’s an HDR image of three exposures.
Reducing Noise With Photo Stacking
In low light situations when the ISO is cranked up to uncomfortable levels there can be quite a bit of noise introduced in the photos. If the scene is reasonable static there is a great technique for reducing the noise in the photo considerably. All you have to do is to take multiple shots of the scene with the same exposure settings and then do some magic in the after processing of the images. Let me show an example.

Photo Editor Evaluation
I am in the middle of evaluating different photo editors. I use Capture One Pro for almost all my photo editing work. It does a great job and in most cases I don’t need any other program. But Capture One Pro can’t do more advanced work like merging multiple exposures or frequency separation. Adobe’s Photoshop is of course a very popular choice for a lot of people. I’m not going back to Adobe since they introduced their “creative cloud” concept with a monthly fee though. If I pay money for software I want to own it. So Photoshop is out of the question for me. There are a number of other candidates to choose from.
Continue readingSan Diego
I went to San Diego on a business trip in 2013 with a bunch of colleagues. I stayed for a month and as usual these days I had my camera with me. San Diego was a very nice place to visit. On this business trip I had extremely long working days so I didn’t have much time to spend on exploring this sunny side of the world. But still I managed to stretch my legs a couple of times.
